Mechanical Crew Member

As a Carman you will receive hands-on training on how to safely perform field inspections, maintenance services, and repairs to railcars as they pass through the facility. Travel and entry-level management opportunities are periodically available for motivated individuals that display strong leadership qualities. Inter-Rail has a reputation for consistently performing timely repairs with a strong focus on safety, quality and efficiency. At each of our service locations, we have qualified mechanical inspectors, AWS certified welders and fabricators, and AAR certified M-970 Multi-Level Rack Inspectors. All railcar services are performed according to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) standards and billed through Association of American Railroads (AAR) system.

Switch Crew Member

As a Conductor, you will receive hands-on training on how to safely direct the movement of railcars within the facility in conjunction with the Engineer and locomotive, as instructed to facilitate the loading/unloading of railcars and the arrival and departure of trains. Inter-Rail owns, operates and maintains our own fleet of locomotives and trackmobiles. Through our in-house American Association of Railroads (AAR) and Federal Railroad Association (FRA) certification processes, we have over 100 certified engineers and conductors throughout multiple locations nationwide.

TO BE QUALIFIED, THE INDIVIDUAL MUST :

  • Have a positive attitude, be reliable, and a team player
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be able to pass a 7-year background check
  • Be able to pass drug screens (pre-employment and random)
  • Have a valid drivers license and acceptable motor vehicle record
  • Have no alcohol related violations in the past 3 years
  • Have the flexibility to accommodate start and finish times, work weekends, holidays, etc.
  • Work in all weather conditions (heat, rain, etc.)

 

THE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES OF A CARMAN REQUIRES THAT THE INDIVIDUAL MUST:

  • Wear the required uniform and PPE as instructed
  • Be able to physically climb railcar ladders to a height of 16 ft, gain entry to railcars, and work in close quarters while in railcars
  • Must be able to communicate (read, speak, and write) in English to meet FRA requirements
  • Have ability to train to qualify as a certified welder
  • Must demonstrate, after proper training, the ability to repair railcars in compliance with AAR and FRA standards
  • Must demonstrate, after proper training, the ability to operate forklifts, railcar jacks, and other tools and equipment necessary for completion of assigned tasks
  • Be physically able to lift 50 lbs on a regular basis
  • Be physically able to open and close end doors of a railcar
  • Be physically able to work on your knees with performing mechanical services

 

THE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES OF A CARMAN REQUIRES THAT THE INDIVIDUAL MUST:

  • Wear the required uniform and PPE as instructed
  • Must be able to conform to AAR and FRA guidelines at a minimum as applicable.
  • Must be able to participate in daily safety and job briefings
  • Must be able to perform radio tests before any work begins
  • Must be able to inspect all equipment at the start of the shift
  • Must be able to use proper radio communication while working
  • Must be able to control the movement of trains and engines
  • Must be able to throw and inspect switches
  • Must be able to know if a track in lined in or out; or if a switch is lined against the movement
  • Must be able to hook up air hoses and open and close angle cocks
  • Must be able to MU-ing engines correctly
  • Must be able to uncouple railcars and engines
  • Must be able to identify that flags and derails are up or down on all tracks
  • Must be able to safely ride railcars and engines
  • Must be physically able to get on/off railcars and engines
  • Must be able to protect shoves
  • Must be able to read and complete switch lists properly
  • Must be able to talk to train crews on the radio with proper radio communication
  • Must be able to put oil and water in engines, replace brakes shoes, etc.
  • Must be able to properly secure engines when work is complete

Reporting directly to an immediate Supervisor, Operations Manager, Assistant Manager, Regional Manager, General Manager, and or Vice President of Rail Operations.
